Research Highlights

The Problem: Educators face recurring concerns regarding whether emerging technologies, specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI), enhance learning or paralyze independent critical thinking and academic integrity.

The Method: Westside Community Schools established an AI Task Force in 2024—comprising technology leaders, teachers, and administrators—to develop a district-wide "AI Game Plan" grounded in ethical use, transparency, and digital literacy.

Quantitative Finding: The district serves 6,200 students and 1,000 staff members; in August 2025, all teachers participated in differentiated professional development, choosing between "AI 101" for beginners and "AI 300" for advanced users.

Qualitative Finding: Effective AI integration requires a human-centered approach where AI supports rather than replaces human thought; transparency is maintained through student citations of AI use; educational leaders must act as "lead learners" who model curiosity and humility.

Abstract

This article chronicles the intentional and evolving approach of Westside Community Schools in Omaha, Nebraska, toward integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching and learning. Grounded in historical parallels to earlier technological shifts such as calculators, the Internet, and search engines, the district emphasizes ethical implementation, transparency, and ongoing professional learning rather than restriction or avoidance.

Through the development of an AI Task Force, differentiated professional development, and community engagement initiatives, Westside seeks to promote AI literacy while preserving academic integrity and human-centered decision-making. The district’s framework prioritizes safety, equity, and responsible use, positioning AI as a tool to enhance—not replace—critical thinking and creativity. While challenges related to adoption, perception, and rapid technological change remain, Westside’s experience highlights the importance of adaptive leadership, cultural trust, and continuous learning in preparing students for an AI-driven future.
