Abstract
This study, The Prose, the People and the Programs, explores the landscape of journalism education at the collegiate level through a multifaceted approach encompassing historical analysis, institutional comparison, and personal reflection. Authored by Daribell Charles Shoults, the project is divided into four main chapters, each addressing a core component of journalism education. The first chapter traces the evolution of journalism textbooks, particularly focusing on pre-1940 texts, to illustrate how pedagogical materials have mirrored changing educational philosophies and professional expectations. The second chapter examines the backgrounds and qualifications of journalism instructors, highlighting the importance of practical newsroom experience and analyzing how educators transition from journalism careers into academia. The third chapter provides a comparative case study of three journalism programs—Florissant Valley Community College, Lindenwood College, and the University of Missouri-Columbia—offering insights into structural and curricular differences that shape student learning experiences. The final chapter is a personal narrative, reflecting on the author’s own teaching experiences and how the preceding research informed his instructional methods. The project underscores the interconnectedness of textbooks, instructors, and program structures in shaping journalism education and emphasizes the continued relevance of hands-on experience in training future journalists. The work concludes with a call for greater formalized support and training for journalism educators, recognizing that while professional experience is critical, pedagogical competence is equally vital for effective teaching. This study serves both as a scholarly resource and a practical guide for those involved in journalism education.
