Abstract

This study investigates the transportation needs and challenges of elderly residents in West St. Louis County, with particular attention to their access to public transit and specialized services. The research draws on a survey of 100 seniors, supplemented by a review of existing transportation infrastructure and demographic trends. Findings reveal that while the elderly population in the region is growing, available transportation options remain limited, especially for those who no longer drive or have restricted mobility.

Survey responses indicate that many seniors rely heavily on family, friends, or community services for rides, highlighting the lack of independence and flexibility in their travel. A significant portion of respondents expressed difficulties in accessing healthcare, grocery stores, social activities, and religious services due to limited transportation availability. Although programs like Call-A-Ride provide valuable assistance, barriers such as scheduling constraints, service coverage, and capacity limitations prevent these services from fully meeting the community’s needs.

The study emphasizes that transportation is directly linked to seniors’ quality of life, affecting not only access to essential services but also social engagement and mental well-being. Recommendations include expanding specialized transit options, improving coordination among service providers, and raising awareness of available programs. The report also calls for long-term planning to address the anticipated growth of the elderly population in the region, suggesting that policymakers, transit agencies, and community organizations collaborate to create more flexible, accessible, and reliable mobility solutions.

Overall, the research underscores that improving transportation accessibility for seniors in West St. Louis County is critical for sustaining independence, reducing isolation, and enhancing overall well-being.
