Abstract

This project reflects the writer's interest in creating and combining relevant, notional, communicative, sociocultural, and grammatical materials into meaningful units for English as a Second .Language syllabi. Every attempt is made to make each step meaningful and useful to the special needs of students from vastly different cultural backgrounds(for example, Indo-Chinese refugee adults).

After a brief preface, a syllabus is presented for students who have had some background in English as a Second Language. The curriculum for each week includes the notions, communicative functions, sociocultural aspects , syntactical patterns , and grammatical categories to be taught. Morphological features and new tenses are also sometimes included.

Chapter II discusses the methodologies used with the syllabus. Four methodologies are suggested: the audiomotor, the modified audiolingual, the modified cognitive- code , and the modified "natural" approach. Exercise examples showing the usefulness of the methods and the differences in methodological approaches are presented.

Chapter III comprises a sample lesson plan for Week One, where student comprehension through contextualization is a primary goal. The teaching points, the channels of communication, the methodologies, the procedures, the teaching aids, and the required time for presentation are pointed out. Measurement of comprehension , review, and expansion of teaching points are sometimes also included.
