Abstract
This study assessed whether married couples increased marital satisfaction and effective communication by participating in a marriage enrichment program based on Gottman's communication skills training. Forty-two couples were given the Marital Adjustment Test (MAT), The Marital Communication Inventory (MCI), and a demographic questionnaire at the beginning of the study. Two control groups, a waiting list and a no-treatment, were used in the study. The experimental group participated in four communication training sessions. The communication skills were incorporated through discussions, role plays, and practical application by the couples during the sessions. Following training the MAT and MCI were readministered to the experimental and control groups. Pretest and posttest results were analyzed using T-tests and analysis of variance. Multiple regression determined correlations among the demographic variables and the scores on the MAT and MCI.
