Abstract
Women between the ages of 35 and 50 were the subject s of a study to explore the relationship between level of self- esteem and amount of planned lei sure time . The differences between employed and unemployed women with regard to level of self-esteem and amount of planned leisure time were also examined . Seventy-five subjects completed a self-administered self- esteem test (the Personal Data Inventory) and a Leisure Diary. Significant relationships were not found between level of self - esteem and amount of planned leisure time or between employment status and self- esteem . For a one-week period, unemployed women were found to have a significantly greater number of leisure hours and a significantly greater amount of planned leisure time than employed women . However, the percentage of total leisure time that was planned by unemployed women was essentially equal to the percentage planned by employed women . The study also found that for the entire subject sample, the mean number of leisure hours for a week was greater than the mean for the general population as assessed by a national poll. Subjects with part-time employment had less leisure time than either unemployed or employed subjects and less leisure time than the general population.
