Abstract
Marian Rice's thesis compares two models of psychiatry: dynamic and ego developmental. The dynamic model, rooted in classical psychoanalytic theory, focuses on resolving the Oedipal conflict. The ego developmental model emphasizes object relations theory and resolving the rapprochement crisis. The thesis explores the history of psychoanalytic theory, highlighting the evolution of Freud's ideas and the contributions of other theorists like Reich, A. Freud, and Hartmann. Object relations theory, a key aspect of ego developmental psychology, is discussed in detail, examining the works of Klein, Fairbairn, Winnicott, Balint, and Mahler. The thesis concludes by summarizing both models and emphasizing the importance of object relations theory in understanding and treating severe pathology.
