Abstract
The document is a culminating project by Barbara P. Reading, detailing her efforts to create a library media center (LMC) at Metro High School in St. Louis, Missouri, during the 1980-1981 academic year. The school, an alternative institution for college-bound students, previously lacked such a resource. The project focused on designing a program aligned with the school’s unique educational goals and integrating multimedia materials to support both teachers and students.
Barbara initiated the LMC by ordering furniture, books, and audio-visual equipment, carefully selected based on input from staff and students. She emphasized the importance of having diverse, multi-ethnic resources to reflect the school's desegregation efforts. The LMC aimed to create an inclusive environment where students could engage in independent research, develop library skills, and explore creative projects using a dedicated production area.
Her vision included fostering collaboration between teachers and the librarian to integrate library resources into lesson plans and cultivating students' ability to locate and use materials efficiently. Barbara also introduced a student assistant program to involve learners in LMC operations and improve their organizational and technical skills. Long-term goals included meeting state standards, achieving accreditation, and creating a dynamic, responsive media center that supports academic success.
