Abstract
This curriculum of science activities was developed to be used with a content-oriented text in the intermediate grades of elementary school. It was specifically designed to give students additional practice in using the process skills in the various units of science, The author felt the need for this curriculum after teaching both content- and process-oriented programs, as each left much to be desired when taught in isolation.
This researcher believes that children learn best by doing, and that science is an ideal area in which to develop the skills that produce independent learners and critical thinkers. However, as research shows, science is the subject most neglected at the elementary level. Two of the major reasons for this are the need for expensive equipment to complete the suggested activities, and teachers who are unprepared to teach science, resulting in high anxiety levels.
Therefore, this curriculum was designed to aid those teachers by including only activities in which the materials are free or inexpensive, and can be easily obtained. They are arranged sequentially within each unit of study, and should encourage even the most reluctant teacher to attempt them by their simple format.
A set of warm-up activities precedes the units. They are general enough to be used before any particular area, and versatile enough to be used more than once.
