Abstract

Using a qualitative approach. 13 parents of children with mental retardation were interviewed about their concerns. attitudes and beliefs relating to the sexuality of their child. Results indicated that concerns have changed very little over the years. but there has been a definite change in attitudes. Parents talked more about choice and dignity. They are less willing to accept sterilization for their children. and more willing to accept sexual expression through heterosexual relationships with and without marriage. The implications for educators and mental health professionals were discussed.
