Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a handbook for independent study programs for small high schools. Small private high schools in the St. Louis area were surveyed in regard to their independent study programs. It was found that schools using such programs were enthusiastic about the results they produced. Current literature also showed the value of independent study in promoting higher level thinking skills among students. The survey results and information gathered from current literature were then used to formulate a handbook for independent study programs at small high schools.
