Abstract
Stephanie Afful, a psychology professor, presents on the topic of "Product of our environment? Perceived identity and typicality in couples." She introduces research conducted with her undergraduate students, focusing on a social psychology lens examining how social situations impact individual behavior and attitudes within the context of relationships.
Initially, she mentions studies on perceived racial and gender identity in romantic couples, specifically investigating how identity influences perceived attractiveness in different-raced partners.
Afful highlights a study examining how racial identity changes and is perceived in interracial couples. This study investigated how perceptions differ when biracial males are pictured with either all-Black or mixed-race groups. Additionally, it examined how white female and male partners in interracial relationships are perceived as more tolerant compared to those in intraracial relationships, while this perception did not hold true for Black partners.
Finally, Afful mentions ongoing research focusing on implicit and explicit support for interracial couples and whether social status influences perceived racial and gender identities.
