Art and Culture in the Multiverse of Metaverses
Abstract
This chapter investigates how avatars, as digital representations of self, facilitate new forms of cultural expression and identity exploration within digital spaces. It discusses the role of avatars in embodying cultural, racial, and gender identities, and how these digital personas influence users’ experiences and interactions in virtual realms. The narrative highlights the transformative potential of avatars in transcending physical limitations and fostering inclusivity by allowing users to experiment with and redefine aspects of their identity. The chapter also examines the socio-cultural implications of avatars in cultural heritage contexts, where they serve as mediators of historical narratives and cultural learning. By focusing on both the opportunities and challenges presented by avatars in cultural engagement, the text explores how digital embodiment impacts the perception of self and others in increasingly interconnected virtual societies. Through detailed analysis of user engagement and the performative aspects of avatars, this chapter contributes to a broader understanding of the digital landscape’s influence on contemporary identity and cultural dynamics.
