Abstract

During his career, columnist and editor Edmund Yates made a sustained attempt to naturalize the publication of gossip and personal information in popular newspapers. This essay looks at three of Yates’s gossip columns from different points in his career in order to explain how the intimacy of spoken gossip could be preserved in a textual, mass-produced medium. The voices of Yates’s columnists are carefully crafted to build relationships with readers, forging community identity through shared knowledge of the social world.
