Abstract
Nationwide, the role and impact of Black male educators and administrators in schools is a critical area of study. This research focuses on a predominantly Black, Catholic high school in the Midwest, where Black male educators and administrators comprise 40% of the staff, providing a unique setting for exploration. While numerous studies have examined Black male educators' experiences, motivations, and perspectives, this research seeks to understand the dynamics within a school where they are significantly represented. This study provided a comprehensive understanding of their influence through surveys, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups with Black male teachers, administrators, alumni, and parents. Findings indicated that a substantial number of Black male educators positively impacted teaching practices, professional relationships, and their students' academic and personal development, particularly Black males. Key findings highlighted the importance of role models, representation, and cultural relevance. Black male educators served as vital role models, their representation fostered a more inclusive environment, and their culturally relevant teaching practices enhanced student engagement and learning outcomes.
This dissertation aimed to fill a gap in the literature by offering insights into the experiences and impacts of Black male educators in a setting where they are the majority as it relates to the school staff and administration. It highlighted the broader implications for educational diversity, suggesting that such environments, as seen in the predominantly Black, Catholic high school in the Midwest, could lead to exceptional educational outcomes. The study advocated for strategies to create and sustain inclusive and supportive educational settings that promote the success of both educators and students, thereby fostering a more diverse and successful educational landscape.
