Abstract

This study, conducted by Robert E. Sandberg, presents a comparative analysis of the administrative practices and organizational structures of eight independent colleges in Missouri. With a professional background in both corporate management and higher education administration, Sandberg approaches the research from a general management theory perspective, applying principles from noted theorists such as Fayol, Glueck, Barnard, and Brech. The primary goal of the study is to identify commonalities and variations in the administrative organization of these institutions, particularly within the four major functional areas of college administration: academic affairs, student personnel, business affairs, and external affairs.

Data for the study was gathered through organizational chart analysis and structured interviews with the chief executive officers of participating institutions. The research highlights both uniform patterns and notable deviations in how administrative responsibilities are distributed, as well as the influence of institutional priorities and executive leadership on these structures.

Significant findings include inconsistencies in the placement of functions such as admissions, counseling, and athletics, as well as variations in faculty involvement in institutional governance. The study underscores the importance of strategic planning, coordination among departments, and the integration of student development philosophies into administrative practices.

In concluding, Sandberg offers several recommendations to enhance administrative effectiveness, including greater faculty participation in governance, re-evaluation of student personnel's developmental role, and the adoption of long-range planning over reactive, short-term decision-making. The thesis serves as a resource for college administrators seeking to refine organizational efficiency and align administrative structures with institutional missions.
