Abstract

Parents: Partners in Education by M. Lois Turner explores the critical role of parental involvement in the educational development of children. The thesis posits that when parents act as active partners in their child’s education, the benefits extend to the child, school, family, and society as a whole. The paper aims to provide practical guidance and theoretical foundations for building stronger school-home relationships.

The study begins with a review of the historical and current perspectives on parenting and education, emphasizing how the roles of both schools and families have evolved. It details the impact of social and economic changes on family dynamics and parental engagement, supported by contemporary research and statistical data. The author argues that educational institutions must adapt by fostering more inclusive and supportive environments for parents.

Central to the work is a comprehensive theoretical framework addressing child development (physical, cognitive, social, moral, and ego), parenting skills, communication and discipline theories, and learning systems. Drawing on the works of Piaget, Erikson, Kohlberg, and others, Turner outlines developmental stages and appropriate parental expectations, reinforcing the importance of tailored parenting approaches.

The applied component of the study is a parent workshop program designed and implemented by the author in collaboration with educators. The workshop aimed to educate parents on child development and practical strategies for supporting learning at home. Materials, activities, and evaluations from the workshop are provided in the appendix, illustrating real-world application of the study’s principles.

Turner concludes by advocating for continued efforts to integrate parents into educational processes, offering recommendations and alternative approaches. The thesis highlights the necessity of empowering parents with knowledge and resources, ultimately promoting a more cohesive and effective educational experience for children.
