Abstract

This thesis presents a detailed study and analysis of six significant wind band works composed during the twentieth century, chosen for their prominence within the standard repertoire and their influence on the development of band literature. The selected works include Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F for Military Band, Percy Grainger’s Colonial Song, Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Toccata Marziale, Norman Dello Joio’s Variants on a Medieval Tune, John Barnes Chance’s Variations on a Korean Folk Song, and Claude T. Smith’s Emphatic Variations.

Each chapter provides a historical background of the composer and the selected work, followed by a structural and theoretical analysis. Attention is given to elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, orchestration, and formal design in order to illuminate the compositional techniques employed. In addition, rehearsal and performance considerations are addressed, with suggestions for conductors regarding interpretive choices and potential challenges in preparing these works with ensembles.

The purpose of this study is twofold: first, to offer conductors and music educators practical insights into six representative twentieth-century wind band compositions; and second, to contribute to the broader understanding of the stylistic variety and technical demands found within modern band repertoire. By situating these works in their historical and pedagogical contexts, the study emphasizes their enduring value as teaching pieces as well as performance staples.

Ultimately, this thesis seeks to assist conductors in both score study and rehearsal planning, providing analytical and interpretive tools that can enhance ensemble preparation and performance. The selected works reflect a diversity of style and approach, collectively demonstrating the artistic breadth of the twentieth-century wind band tradition.
