Abstract

This paper discusses the ways in which mid-life mothers reflected their attitudes toward the emerging womanhood of their adolescent daughters through art work. It concerns natural and normal developmental stresses which occur as mothers and daughters pass through difficult life stages somewhat simultaneously. A non-clinical group of four mothers between 38 and 44-years old with daughters between 14 and 17-years old responded to five specifically designed drawing tasks derived from literature on mid-life and mothers and daughters. Information was elicited regarding each mother's relationship to her own mother, the negotiation of her own adolescence, and her present self-concept. Discussion of each mother's idiosyncratic responses are included.
