Abstract
This thesis documents the directorial process for a student-produced staging of Neil Simon’s play, Chapter Two. The project, directed by graduate student Roger Tackette, served as his culminating master's degree project for Lindenwood College's Performing Arts Department. It explores the multifaceted journey of a theatrical production, from initial concept to final performance.
The thesis delves into various aspects of the production, including pre-production work, which involved developing a conceptual basis for the play and analyzing the script using Francis Hodge's framework. The document details the audition process, casting decisions, and the five-step rehearsal method employed by the director. It also highlights the challenges and collaborative nature of production meetings, where design elements like sets, costumes, and lighting were fused to create a cohesive artistic vision.
The paper concludes with an evaluation of the production's success, noting the achievement of key goals such as believability and vulnerability in the performances. The director reflects on the logistical hurdles, including limited equipment and budget constraints, and emphasizes the importance of clear communication among the cast and crew. Overall, the work provides a comprehensive account of a student-led theatrical endeavor and its role in an academic context.
