Abstract
This is a project for training teachers of students who are blind or have low vision in Tanzania, East Africa. Blindness is viewed as one of the most feared disabilities to afflict mankind . There are millions of people throughout the world who are blind or have low vision; young-old, men-women, boys-girls, black-white, rich- poor, there are no barriers . In Tanzania, East Africa, £or every 100,000 people in certain areas, there are an estimated 500 people who are blind. It is because of this high incidence that this project is written . Since research does not indicate any concrete programs for training teachers of students who are blind or have low vision in Tanzania, it is hoped that this project can serve as a guide in the development of one. This project presents background on the educational system of Tanzania, and curriculum development in the field of blind/low vision training in the United States. Curricula adaptations are made and a course plan is developed for training teachers of students who are blind or have low vision in Tanzania. Finally, a curriculum guide for a year's course to teach Reading/Writing Braille that can serve as a model for additional curriculum development in this area is presented.
