Abstract

This study, titled "Experimenting with Varied Learning Environments in a Traditional Setting," explores the integration of alternative and open classroom strategies within a conventional fourth-grade classroom in suburban St. Charles, Missouri. Conducted by Linda Stanford in partial fulfillment of her Master of Arts degree at Lindenwood College in 1976, the research investigates how varied learning environments—such as learning centers, student choice activities, and peer teaching—affect student attitudes toward learning, the teacher, and their own learning styles.

The study implemented five experimental activities: Reading Choices, a Language Block with multiple learning stations, Math Games taught to younger students, thematic learning centers on the desert, and collaborative handwriting evaluation. Data collection was primarily qualitative, relying on student questionnaires, teacher observations, and behavior logs.

Key findings indicate that students responded positively to environments that offered choice and independence. For example, the Reading Choices and Math Games activities were particularly well-received, with students showing enthusiasm and improved engagement. Conversely, more structured components like the Language Block yielded mixed reactions, suggesting that excessive structure may dampen student enthusiasm.

The results support the hypothesis that varied learning experiences can foster positive student attitudes toward both learning and the teacher. While the study’s scope is limited to one classroom and lacks randomized control, it suggests that even within traditional educational settings, implementing student-centered, choice-based learning methods can enhance the learning environment. Recommendations include further research on the academic impact of these strategies and their scalability to diverse student populations.
