Abstract
Men and women between the ages of 18 and 29 were the subjects of a study designed to explore their gender preferences for their children , to examine the stated reasons for the preferences, and to consider the implications of these attitudes for the subjects and society as a whole . Four-hundred and forty- three respondents completed a one- page questionnaire addressing these issues and requesting data regarding sex, age , and marital status . The results were then compared to those of previous studies focusing on the issue of gender preference from the 1950s and 1970s. The new generation of subjects employed here showed significant changes in regards to the adult female ' s gender preference but exhibited minimal changes in the adult male ' s preferred gender. Women made a shift from male- gender bias in the 1950s and 1970s to female-gender preference in 1990 . The reasons for their change in gender preference included (a) the acceptance of one ' s own gender and (b) the perception of a female role advantage.
