Abstract
This study is undertaken in an attempt to create a viable curriculum for a Master of Arts in Education for the teaching of English as a Second Language. The field of English as a Second Language has evolved into a profession unto its own only in the last thirty years and has been attracting professionals who have had little or no training in pedagogy or English as a Second Language methodology. Much has been learned about the field in the past thirty years. Second language teachers must have special training that is different from English teachers and foreign language teachers. They should have preparation in linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, culture and society, as well as professional education courses including second language pedagogy and second language assessment. The best way to implement this kind of training is to plan an integrated curriculum that will provide theoretical knowledge and practical experience. This paper presents background on the learning theories that resulted from research since 1940 and on the trends in teacher training in the field of English as a second language. A course plan for a graduate program is developed as well as curriculum for a semester's course in methods that can serve as a model for additional curriculum development in this area.
