Abstract
This thesis, A Suggested Curriculum for the Teaching of Creative Writing in the Secondary School by Joyce Reynolds, presents a structured approach to fostering creativity and writing proficiency among high school students. It emphasizes the importance of creative expression as a means of intellectual and personal growth, arguing that traditional education often fails to encourage independent and imaginative thinking. The curriculum is designed to develop students’ writing abilities through structured lessons, interactive classroom activities, and self-reflective practices.
The document outlines course objectives, including personal responsibility in learning, identity exploration, and skill development in descriptive, narrative, and poetic writing. It also provides instructional strategies, emphasizing the use of imagery, figurative language, and structured storytelling to enhance students’ creative capacities. Additionally, the thesis includes evaluation methods to assess students’ progress, encouraging peer feedback and personal reflection over rigid grading systems.
Practical teaching resources, such as recommended books, films, and hands-on activities, support the curriculum. The thesis argues that fostering creativity in writing leads to more engaged learners who are better prepared to think critically and adapt to an ever-changing world. Overall, the proposed curriculum aims to cultivate a generation of confident, innovative writers who actively shape their learning experiences.
