Abstract
This project is a phenomenological study on contemporary menstrual art. The main focus is on how the forms and mediums of contemporary art have allowed the phenomena of menstrual art to exist within a society that still holds a majority of menstrual taboos. The purpose of this project is to fill the gap in the art history discourse that excludes menstrual art as a category and menstrual blood as a medium while also recognizing the phenomenon these menstrual artworks create that help to promote more menstrual awareness and positivity. Furthermore, observation and analysis is given to the ways that contemporary menstrual art is received by audiences in order to better understand if these menstrual taboos still exist today, making menstrual art a phenomenon.
