Abstract

The thesis, The Renewal of Insight: Exhibition of Painting and Calligraphy by Chu Chen-Nan, explores the intimate relationship between Chinese painting and calligraphy, emphasizing their shared origins and intertwined development. Chu Chen-Nan reflects on how Chinese calligraphy, with its expressive use of brush and ink, plays a crucial role in both artistic creation and the appreciation of visual arts. Drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese masters, Chu aligns his work with the idea that both painting and calligraphy emphasize qualities like structure, speed, and dignity, rather than solely focusing on representational accuracy.

Throughout the thesis, Chu explores the contrast and harmony between Eastern and Western artistic philosophies. He stresses the importance of standing locally within his cultural heritage while embracing global perspectives to push traditional boundaries. His time at Lindenwood University provided him with opportunities to merge his experiences and refine his craft, leading to the creation of dynamic and multi-dimensional artwork that reflects both personal insight and cultural identity.

Chu’s exhibition showcases a variety of works, from photography to ink and water paintings, each piece embodying his philosophical reflections on nature, culture, and life. The thesis concludes by underscoring the continuous process of artistic renewal and insight, positioning the artist as a cultural agent who navigates between tradition and modernity, chaos and order.
