Abstract
Wrongful convictions due to eyewitness identification emerge when a witness incorrectly identifies an innocent person as the perpetrator of a crime. Amidst being a common convincing form of proof in criminal trials, eyewitness identification can be undependable due to several factors, such as cognitive deficits, bias, and suggestion. Wrongful convictions based on eyewitness identification can have devastating consequences for the innocent person and their family. Furthermore, the actual perpetrator of the crime is free to commit additional crimes. To address this issue, various measures to improve the reliability of eyewitness identification have been proposed, such as using double-blind lineups, informing witnesses that the perpetrator may not be present in the lineup, and videotaping the identification procedure. My presentation will show how witnesses Misidentification leads to false confessions and injustice to our legal system.
