Abstract

Benjamin Reeves and Thomas Mather report to Secretary of War James Barbour that they began surveying the route from Fort Osage toward Santa Fe in July 1825. In August they met with leaders of the Great and Little Osage and the Kansas tribes, securing treaties allowing the road to be marked and freely used by U.S. and Mexican travelers. They reached the U.S.–Mexico boundary in early September and waited for further instructions. To avoid delaying the project, they decided that George Sibley would continue to Santa Fe for the winter while Reeves and Mather returned east to finish marking the main portion of the road. They expect to complete the full report in spring and note that, if arrangements are made with Mexico, the entire road could be finished by summer.
