Generative AI in the English Composition Classroom
Abstract
This book aims to provide Composition instructors with a foundational understanding of AI tools and their potential for integration into writing classrooms. The authors, who hold diverse perspectives on the role of AI in teaching writing, argue that AI should not be kept out of Composition courses. AI must have a significant role in the teaching of Composition, and instructors have a responsibility to help students develop AI literacy. The introduction situates the arrival of AI tools within a historical context of educators’ reactions to new technologies, drawing parallels to the field’s engagement with computers and the internet. The authors introduce their individual approaches to incorporating AI, ranging from discrete activities and discussions to a full integration of AI in the writing process. They emphasize the importance of teaching students to use AI critically and reflectively, preparing them for a future where writing with AI will be increasingly common in professional settings. The book offers strategies and activities for instructors at various stages of AI integration, while acknowledging the diversity of thought among the authors regarding the particulars of AI’s role in Composition pedagogy.
