Abstract
From my not-so-ivory tower I wondered-was the Dragon Grammaticus still raging in middle school? Had he been slain and buried under heaps of Warriner's or tamed to function as servant to the Lords of the Writing Process? Was he caged, like a pesky predator, to be let out only when the King of Standardized Tests approached, or did he sit cowering in a corner, convinced of his uselessness by the verdict of the Supreme Judge, Research? I had my suspicions. My scouts (preservice teacher-education students) had reported sightings of the Drag- on. When the English Journal issued a call for manuscripts on the subject of language study in the middle grades, I knew more concrete data were needed.
