Abstract
This new critical overview of the Renaissance and Baroqueeras traces the development of art theory and its influence on style. By considering the stylistic transformation of particular artists - Michelangelo, Annibale Carracci, Guercino, Guido Reni, Poussin, and others - and the contemporary intellectual environments surrounding them, the nature and potency of theory can be demonstrated. Through the analysis and interpretation of previously overlooked and untranslated texts in a variety of disciplines from art and poetic theory, natural philosophy, astronomy and many others, James Hutson investigates the relationship between theory and practice, thus providing insight into the interdisciplinary reality of art-making and interpretation.
