Abstract
The presence of alchemical imagery in Arthur's dream vision—imagery which develops across the English chronicle tradition and which is then incorporated into the alliterative and romance traditions—demonstrates that medieval writers were making use of alchemy as a literary motif of transformation for political purpose as early as the appearance of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae.
