Beetle Panic!

Abstract

Beetle Panic! is a 3D game designed in GDevelop that combines exploration, collectible-based scoring, time management, and enemy avoidance in a compact, interactive level. Players navigate the environment to collect four coins, each worth 25 points, while managing a 60-second timer and avoiding a pursuing enemy known as the Beetle Bot. Environmental objects, including movable blocks, provide opportunities for tactical interaction by obstructing the enemy's movement. Contact with the enemy resets the scene, adding risk to the player's efforts to complete the objective before time expires.

The game incorporates a scoring system, countdown timer, audio feedback, and end-state messaging to communicate gameplay progress and outcomes. Collecting all four coins triggers the victory state, while expiration of the timer ends the round. The victory message, “You Winner!,” is an intentional humorous reference to the notoriously unconventional victory message in Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing (2003), incorporating video game history and internet gaming culture into the project's personality.

Beetle Panic! demonstrates the implementation of core game mechanics, event-based logic, asset integration, user interface elements, and interactive enemy behavior within a 3D environment. The project evolved through iterative development and troubleshooting, with design decisions shaped by practical constraints and the prioritization of functional gameplay. It serves as a small-scale exploration of game design and development, emphasizing player objectives, environmental interaction, feedback, and the integration of multiple systems into a playable experience.
