rène Mathieu is a writer from Virginia and a 2009 graduate of the College of William & Mary (BA in International Relations). Her essay was written during a year in the Dominican Republic, where she completed Fulbright research on gender and tuberculosis. Previous publications include poetry in the magazines 34th Parallel, Magnapoets, and Damselfly Press, and photography in 34th Parallel and The Meadowland Review. Irène was a finalist in the Jane’s Stories Press Foundation’s 2010 poetry contest.
