Abstract

Laura F. Scales' 1982 culminating project, A Social Studies Course of Study for the Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Graders, presents a middle school curriculum designed to foster multicultural awareness and civic competence. Recognizing the need for educational programs that prepare students for life in a pluralistic society, Scales emphasizes the integration of ethnic studies across disciplines. The curriculum includes ten thematic units focusing on family structures, cultural contributions, migration patterns, values across generations, and ethnic identity. Lessons are built around active learning strategies, including interviews, research projects, creative arts, and a culminating multiethnic festival. Scales advocates for developing positive self-images, critical thinking skills, and respect for cultural diversity. She stresses that multicultural education should begin early, continue throughout schooling, and be adaptable to societal changes. The project draws from educational theorists like Banks and Taba, encouraging interdisciplinary approaches and addressing societal issues such as racism, assimilation, and cultural conflict. By combining historical perspectives, personal identity exploration, and community engagement, the curriculum aims to help students understand their own backgrounds while fostering empathy toward others. Scales argues that effective multicultural education strengthens democratic values, enriches students' academic skills, and builds a foundation for harmonious social integration.
