Abstract
Genetically engineered products are being produced at an economical level. products is bovine sornatotropin. One of these Injections of bovine sornatotropin increase milk yield in dairy cattle. This increase in production per cow is consistent with the thirty year trend of fewer dairy farms, fewer cows, and more milk per cow.
Starting in the 1950's in the mechanical era, farmers went from horses to tractors. In the chemical era, herbicides and fertilizers started being used. Now in the 1980's the technical era is coming in to existence . Through all of these era's there was controversy. Each of these era's brought about increased efficiency at the farm level. Through this efficiency some farmers have left the agriculture industry.
The current agriculture policy provides for changes in price supports through 1990. It is suggested that the policy needs to be examined to see if the policy is still viable with the introduction of these new technologies. Whether or not the policy is reviewed, milk prices to the dairy farmer probably will drop. With this drop, the dairy farmer will have to be efficient to survive. The dairy farmer will have to look at each new technology and decide if it will fit into his management program. To be more efficient in the future the dairy farmer may have to consider increasing his business skills, or hiring consultants to help him in the areas that he lacks. The dairy industry and the dairy farmer will be impacted by bovine somatotropin, but the farmer will have a hand in how his future turns out.
