Abstract
This thesis documents the development of “Driving After Age 55,” a specialized driver education program tailored for older adults, particularly members of the National Retired Teachers Association/American Association of Retired Persons (NRTA/AARP). Created during Seaton's tenure with NRTA/AARP and his graduate studies at Lindenwood College, the program addresses the unique needs of drivers aged 55 and older—an often-overlooked demographic in traditional defensive driving curricula. The thesis outlines the rationale for a separate course, citing age-related physical changes, increased accident rates per miles driven, and a lack of formal driver training among older populations. It includes an assessment of existing programs, many of which were limited in scope or had ceased operation. Seaton's work emphasizes comprehensive program planning, including need assessment, stakeholder engagement, proposal writing, and collaboration with organizations like the American Medical Association and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The proposed curriculum incorporates adult learning principles and aims to improve older drivers’ safety, extend their driving years, and reduce insurance costs. Ultimately, the thesis serves as a case study in voluntary program development and as a model for addressing the safety and education needs of aging drivers on a national scale.
