Abstract
"Branching From Within" is a counseling and rehabilitation program designed to support individuals with physical disabilities through an integrated therapeutic approach. Developed by Jenny Ransom and Nancy Belohlavek as part of their graduate studies at Lindenwood Colleges, the program combines counseling, guided imagery, relaxation training, and altered states of consciousness techniques to help clients adjust to their disabilities, enhance self-confidence, and improve overall well-being.
The thesis details the program’s development, administration, and research findings, emphasizing its holistic approach to therapy. Clients participated in structured sessions incorporating behavioral self-monitoring, journaling, and relaxation techniques, showing improvements in emotional resilience, pain management, and independence. The study compares structured therapy with traditional counseling and highlights the advantages of a more immersive, multi-faceted approach.
Additionally, the research explores the social and psychological barriers faced by individuals with disabilities, advocating for community integration and policy reform. The authors also discuss the program’s financial challenges and efforts to secure grants for sustainability.
This work contributes to the field of social work and disability counseling, demonstrating the benefits of tailored therapeutic interventions in fostering self-sufficiency and psychological well-being for individuals living with physical disabilities.
