Abstract

Splinters is a piece of creative fiction that explores how love is communicated through art. A young man shares the art of wood carving with his grandfather who taught him, and, as his grandfather’s health begins to fail, he uses it to return that love to him. Through the eyes of this narrator, we are taken on a journey of love and loss between generations, and come to understand that the simplest of things often hold the greatest weight. Though fiction, this work is heavily inspired by my own relationship with my grandmother and the art we share with one another.
