Abstract

Data indicate that while unintended pregnancies (UIP) in the US have decreased, it is still significantly higher than many other developed countries. Even with the decline in UIP, disparities exist for low-income women, women aged 18-24, and Black women. Sexually active high school students report low contraception usage, increasing the risk for unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Research suggests that when contraception and education are easily accessible, UIP rates go down. However, several state and federal policies legislate less access to reproductive health services, less funding for services, and do not require medically accurate information be provided in schools. This presentation will discuss trends in data, policies, and reproductive health outcomes nationally and here in the metro St. Louis area.
