New Developments in Female Earnings and Marriage

Abstract

In the 1990s, female earnings were significantly lower for married women compared to never-married women, exactly opposite for men. This statistical marriage penalty has declined to the point where never-married women earnings profiles are difficult to distinguish from married women. This project uses the Current Population Survey to trace out the factors of this change. Preliminary results suggest that the change has largely come from the mix of women who stay married as opposed to changes in the effects of marriage on earnings.
