Abstract

Rap music has become commonplace in almost every facet of American culture. While grossing significant revenue and becoming a staple for music listeners across the country, rap music lyrics and videos can also be powerful evidence in the prosecution of gang crime. This article provides a brief history of rap music in the United States and then reviews a sampling of cases that have addressed the use and admissibility of rap lyrics and videos in evidence against criminal defendants.
